• Ben The Illustrator: Liza

    £ 195£ 5,000
Meet Liza. She can't get enough of The Jam. It's Sunday morning and she is surrounded by  Jam vinyl, recovering from a big Saturday night. She's a serious collector, and has first pressings of all six of their UK studio albums, and all sixteen of their UK singles in original sleeves. She likes to crank it up, but has to use headphones as it's still early and she doesn't want to wake the neighbours.  This beautiful new limited edition artwork by Ben the Illustrator is available to purchase in a choice of sizes. The two smaller sizes (small and medium) are archival pigment prints on paper, and prices for these are shown unframed. We can quote you for a frame if you would like us to organise framing/delivery. Just let us know when you put your order in for an unframed print, and we will confirm the cost—which will vary depending on the size, type of glass and your location. Large and Ultra-large sizes are ChromaLuxe prints on high-gloss coated aluminium. ChromaLuxe prints are the absolute perfect match for Ben’s vibrant artworks. If you haven’t seen a ChromaLuxe print before, you are in for a treat. They have an ultra-high-gloss finish, with richly saturated colours and a jewel-like appearance. The technique uses a process called dye-sublimation to fuse the image directly on to a 1.25 mm thick panel of white-coated aluminium—which gives them in-built structural rigidity. They hang straight on the wall without additional framing because there is a special subframe on the reverse—this allows the artwork to hang on the wall while appearing to float. Additional framing/glazing is not required (as ChromaLuxe has a scratchproof surface) but can be arranged as an option. Please allow 2 weeks between order and delivery for small and medium sizes, and 3-4 weeks for large and ultra-large sizes. Check out the options below and give Liza a space on your wall.

  • The studio session for the band’s fifth single, “David Watts/’A’ Bomb in Wardour Street”, took place in Martyn Goddard’s Kensington Church Street studio on 24 May 1978. Martyn observes: “Looking back at the images from this session, the thing that really strikes me is how much fun they were all having. There’s a sense of them operating as a unit in these photographs, and enjoying each other’s company. This was also the first shoot where Paul was in the middle. Usually he stood on the left.” A signed limited edition photograph available in a choice of size options. • The studio session for the band’s second single, “All Around the World”, took place in Martyn Goddard’s Kensington Church Street studio on 1 June 1977. The band were wearing their signature black three-button suits, white button-down shirts and skinny black ties. The plan was to keep the front cover simple: a full-length band shot with a vibrant yellow vinyl-covered background, sprayed with the now familiar Jam logo. Martyn added some dramatic effect by using fashion photography lighting. A signed limited edition photograph available in a choice of size options. • I read somewhere that this is Paul Weller’s favourite photograph of The Jam. Maybe that’s because it is just him and Bruce — or maybe it is because it is a truly great image. We call it “tripod” because Bruce and Paul seem to have fused into a rock-solid three-legged entity. One thing you may not notice at first - see how the shadows form edgy geometric shapes on the floor. Taken in 1978, this photograph appeared on the front cover of NME on 4 November of that year, under the headline “Jam today”.  This silver gelatin photograph is made in the darkroom from Pennie Smith's original negative on 16 x 20 inch paper, and signed on the front under the image area by Pennie Smith. The image size is 11 x 16 inches approx. The price is shown for an unframed photograph - please ask if you require framing.
  • Paul Weller in cream trousers and corduroy overcoat photographed by Pennie Smith at the video shoot for “Funeral Pyre”. The filming took place at Horsell Common, near Woking in 1981.  This silver gelatin photograph is made in the darkroom from Pennie Smith's original negative on 16 x 20 inch paper, and signed on the front under the image area by Pennie Smith. • What a treat to be able to offer Pennie Smith's photographs to our clients. I love this 1980 photograph of Paul Weller taken at The Town House studios, during the recording of my favourite Jam album, Sounds Affects. It plays a nice visual trick on the viewer. If you start at the top you would be forgiven for thinking that the moon is shining down on an outdoor scene—and the corrugated sheets in the background seem to confirm that thought. Then, once you see the floorboards and microphones you realise your first impressions were wrong.
  • The Jam by Pennie Smith As a photographer you have to be in the right place at the right time. Then you need that blend of skill and luck. The result is this perfect composition. Paul Weller leans back and launches into one on his Rickenbacker. Bruce Foxton leaps so high that he reveals Rick Buckler on drums in the background. The best bit - look at how Bruce's legs form into a perfect 'A', synching with the logo behind. This is a silver gelatin photograph made in the darkroom from the original negative on 16 x 20 inch paper, and signed on the front under the image area by Pennie Smith. The image size is 11 x 16 inches approx. The price is shown for an unframed photograph - please ask if you require framing.
  • Early days—1977—and Pennie Smith captures The Jam in matching black suits, white shirts, black ties and black & white shoes. Three aliens from another time and place, dropped into a London street scene. Life goes on oblivious in the background, but something is starting….. and as a wise man once said: the kids want some action. Who can f****** blame them ? This silver gelatin photograph is made in the darkroom from Pennie Smith's original negative on 16 x 20 inch paper, and signed on the front under the image area by Pennie Smith. The image size is 11 x 16 inches approx. The price is shown for an unframed photograph - please ask if you require framing.
  • In Spines #7 Paul Weller, Keith Haynes recreates the spines of fifty five 12-inch singles and albums by The Jam, The Style Council and Paul Weller. This is not a photograph – it is a drawing that Keith makes from scratch, painstakingly recreating and combining each spine into the overall artwork. There are two versions of Spines #7 Paul Weller: a smaller version with a 50 x 50 cm image printed on 66 x 66 cm paper, which can be supplied framed or unframed. The second option is a larger 90 x 90 cm image size (with no white border around the image) which is mounted on dibond and supplied in a black tray frame, ready to hang.
