Martyn Goddard: Debbie Harry

Debbie for your desktop—or life-size for somewhere else.

Back in August 1978, Martyn Goddard held an exhibition of his photographs of Debbie Harry, titled Blondie In Camera, at the Mirandy Gallery in central London. Debbie attended the show, which was sponsored by Chrysalis Records, and the Sunday Telegraph. Martyn made three life-size cut outs of Debbie as part of the exhibition display, to add some variety alongside the photographs that were framed and on the wall. You can see Debbie admiring them back in 1978 in the photograph above. Sadly all three of these life-size cutouts were stolen during the 1978 exhibition. The triple-theft was never solved.

Martyn was very fond of the cut out Debbies, and has decided that it was high time he made some more. He is producing two signed limited edition versions, each of which is a freestanding three dimensional piece.

The smaller desktop version Debbie cutout measures 40cm (just under 16 inches) high, and is suitable for standing on your desk or bookshelf. A limited edition of 50, signed and numbered on the front, she requires no assembly and is ready to stand, straight from the box, using the pre-fitted support frame on the back. I’ve had the smaller version on my desk for a few days and have found her a great listener, and critical sounding board.

The larger freestanding floor version is 160cm (63 inches) high ( Debbie’s height in real life) and is made in an edition of 10.  Floorstanding life-size Debbie requires a small input on your part to attach the stand to the reverse—a five minute job with a screwdriver—and then she is ready to rock and roll.
