Ross Halfin

Ross Halfin studied fine art at the Wimbledon School of Art during the 1970s. He regularly attended rock concerts in London, and started to take photographs. His images soon began appearing in the music press: Sounds, NME and Melody Maker. This was the start of a career that continues to this day. His photographs have appeared on countless magazine and album covers, and his portrait of Jimmy Page is included in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.

His photo archive is impressive, for sure, but so is his record collection.

That’s where we start this particular journey.

Presenting our collaboration with Ross Halfin and Reel Art Press

Led Zeppelin vinyl

A stunning collection of large format limited edition 3-D ChromaLuxe prints

In the Summer of 2021 our good friends at Reel Art Press published Led Zeppelin Vinyl: The Essential Collection by Ross Halfin. It’s a lavish coffee table book and showcases the best from Ross Halfin’s outstanding collection of Led Zeppelin vinyl.

When I saw the proof of the book, I knew it would be a perfect subject for a collaboration with our Temple of Wax service—where we take a cherished record and ‘supersize’ it as a large format ChromaLuxe print, made on coated aluminium, and cut to the circular shape of the original disk.

ChromaLuxe prints are renowned for their deeply saturated colours, and have an ultra-high gloss surface which just ‘pops’. ChromaLuxe is a perfect method for presenting three dimensional objects in unusual shapes—because they can be cut circular, with the centre hole cut out. The end result is a big shiny 3-D version of a classic record. The image is embedded into the surface of coated aluminium, and is scratchproof and fireproof. Fixed with a subframe on the reverse, it is ready to hang without additional framing—giving the viewer an immediate up-close relationship with the artwork.

We road-tested the project with one of my favourite coloured vinyl records:  a very rare 7 inch single from Iran — the 1970 pressing of “Whole Lotta Love” on the Top Four label. It leapt out immediately—the splatter vinyl is staggeringly beautiful. The original was 7 inches / 18 cm diameter, but we had it made with a 24 inch / 60cm diameter — a 12 times larger surface area than the original.

You can see it alongside, hanging on the wall. Scroll down and you will see some other choice picks from Ross’ collection.

Each photograph in the collection below is available to purchase as a limited edition circular ChromaLuxe print, ready to hang on your wall, and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Ross Halfin.

It goes without saying, but, for the record, we will be giving a copy of Led Zeppelin Vinyl: The Essential Collection by Ross Halfin to any purchaser of one of the ChromaLuxe limited editions.

The limited editions

The photographs shown below are available to purchase as limited edition ChromaLuxe circular prints—in a choice of physical sizes.

ChromaLuxe prints are the perfect match for these large format circular photographs. If you haven’t seen a ChromaLuxe print before, you are in for a treat. They have an ultra-high-gloss finish, with richly saturated colours and a jewel-like appearance. The technique uses a process called dye-sublimation to fuse the image directly on to a 1.25 mm thick panel of white-coated aluminium—which gives them in-built structural rigidity. They hang straight on the wall without additional framing because there is a special subframe on the reverse—this allows the artwork to hang on the wall while appearing to float. Additional framing/glazing is not required (as ChromaLuxe has a scratchproof surface) but can be arranged as an option. ChromaLuxe prints are very light and are easy to ship.

Each one comes with a certificate of authenticity on the reverse signed by Ross Halfin.

The book

Led Zeppelin Vinyl – The Essential Collection by Ross Halfin

Led Zeppelin released only eight studio albums and no singles over the course of their 12-year career, but to date there are more than 1,000 official singles and 2,000 LPs in the market.

This definitive volume illustrates in full colour some of the rarest and most interesting vinyl releases, including one-of-a-kind rarities, bizarre regional variations, official albums and bootleg recordings of legendary concerts, sometimes featuring handmade artwork or colored vinyl. All the vinyl, labels and covers have been documented by photographer Ross Halfin in superb detail, and are annotated with details of their release.

In addition, the book includes over forty pages of the most up-to-date comprehensive discography ever compiled on the band, with forensic detail. All known album and single vinyl releases from around the world are listed with catalogue numbers, release or recording dates and additional notes.

A labour of love, Led Zeppelin Vinyl is a must-have for fans of the group and vinyl enthusiasts. It is a paean of praise to vinyl artwork and graphic design: the illustrations are explosive and surreal, playful, experimental and subversive, interpreting multiple artistic disciplines with flair and wit.

Hardcover, 216 pages, 30 x 30 x 2.5cm.

We are giving the book as a free gift when you purchase one of the limited edition ChromaLuxe artworks.

If you would like to purchase a copy of the book, we recommend buying direct from the publishers through the link below.

How do they look on the wall?

Spectacular.

Here’s “Whole Lotta Love” on the wall. The subframe on the reverse makes hanging possible, creating a drop shadow gap between the wall and the photograph, creating a 3D effect.

Here’s the reverse, showing the subframe and hanging system. The whole piece is very light and easy to handle.
