Real Moments

Bob Dylan by Barry Feinstein

3rd May to 9th September 2008

What a pleasure and a privilege to play host to Barry Feinstein's first UK exhibition of photographs from his legendary Bob Dylan archives. It's been far too long since we hosted a Bob Dylan exhibition, and to make up for it, we can promise a very special show featuring work that Barry Feinstein has never exhibited or offered for sale before. While most people usually associate iconic Dylan imagery with the USA, the vast majority of the 1966 photographs in the exhibition were in fact taken in Britain and Ireland - in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Sheffield, and other familiar locations.

The exhibition will feature photographs spanning an 11 year period, starting with the 1963 cover photograph for The Times They Are A-Changin', concentrating on the incendiary 1966 world tour and ending with the 1974 tour. Bob Dylan didn’t tour in the eight year void between 66 and 74, but Barry was there to capture the end of one creative peak and the start of a new one. Barry’s archive includes some of the most iconic and important photographs of Bob Dylan ever made: the 1966 portrait of Dylan in Liverpool surrounded by street kids which the BBC recreated in 2007 with as many of the original participants as they could locate; the Aust Ferry portrait used on the cover of Martin Scorcese’s No Direction Home, and many more.

The classics will all be there on show, alongside a selection of unseen gems. As Barry explains, “The mutual trust, respect and friendship we had for each other are reflected in these photographs. I liked his work, he liked mine. He knew I would make him look interesting – and he was interesting. I knew I was in the presence of genius.”

Everything in the exhibition will be for sale in a range of sizes from 11 x 14 inches upwards. Barry’s photographs are beautiful handmade silver gelatin prints, created in the darkroom from the original negatives.

The exhibition coincides with the publication of Barry's new hardcover book of Dylan photographs, Real Moments. We’re always partial to a world first, and the publishers have confirmed that we will have the very first copies anywhere in the world of Barry's new book. Many books claim to include unseen photographs. Usually this needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, but not this time. We’re delighted that for a limited time, we’re also able to offer you a special combination package consisting of the book together with a signed 8x10 inch photograph of Bob Dylan from 1966, all for a very special price.

Barry is not able to travel to the exhibition, but he is very excited about it and looking forward to people's reactions to both the book and the show. We can also promise visitors plenty of very loud '66 electric Dylan blasting out throughout the exhibition, and we'll be serving drinks all afternoon on the first day, Saturday 3 May so please do come along and see it all for yourself.

Hope to see you soon
