Wham! 1985 Tour of China
Photographs by Martyn Goddard
On 30 March 1985, Wham! embarked on their Tour of China. Martyn Goddard was there with them as their official photographer, and his images are well-known to Wham! fans the world over.
Martyn remembers the day well: “This tour was a big deal. Wham! were the first western rock band to tour the People’s Republic—even the Rolling Stones and Queen had been refused. A large band of musicians, management, road crew, press corps and film crew, lead by director Lindsay Anderson, departed London Gatwick airport on a British Caledonian DC10 en route to Hong Kong. Two weeks later it was over, and I sat next to George on our flight back to the UK. He signed my copy of the tour itinerary, with the message “I’ll pay you any amount – just don’t publish the memoirs.”
To celebrate the fortieth anniversary, Martyn has selected six limited edition photographs to offer to Wham! aficionados. Each print is made on 12 x 16 inch paper, in a limited edition of 50, signed and numbered by Martyn.
We published a special signed limited edition book of Martyn’s Wham! and George Michael photographs in 2022—and there are a few copies of this available here.
