We are moving.

I am delighted to announce that we are opening a beautiful new 1,500 sq. ft. gallery in Leamington Spa. Our first day is Saturday 18 November 2017, and we launch with an exhibition of photographs of David Bowie and Iggy Pop by legendary Japanese photographer Masayoshi Sukita. Sukita-san will be joining us for the start of the exhibition, and I hope that you will come and see us in our new home.

Why move ?

London rents are now so prohibitively expensive that we felt we needed to cast our eye further afield. We wanted to create a special experience for gallery visitors, and crazy London rental levels simply did not allow us to do that. Our philosophy is simple – Mach Schau. That’s what they used to shout at The Beatles when they first played in Hamburg in 1960, at the Indra and then the Kaiserkeller. Mach Schau. Make a show. It underlies our purpose—to give our clients a really great experience when they make the effort to come and see us.

So when hunting for new premises, it wasn’t going to be enough for the artwork on display to be hanging in a great gallery space that would show it in its best light. We also wanted the gallery itself to be in a location that was going to be interesting as a destination for anyone who made the trip to visit us.

After what feels like months of hunting, we have found a spectacular 1,500 square ft premises—a former restaurant with beautiful high ceilings—right in the centre of Leamington Spa, which is going to be home to the gallery. It feels about five times the size of our previous space in Piccadilly Arcade, and gives us the blank canvas to put on some spectacular exhibitions and other events. So that is what we will be doing.

Leamington Spa ?

Don’t know Leamington spa ? Well now is your time to find out. It is actually called Royal Leamington Spa, and has been since 1838, when Queen Victoria granted it a Royal prefix. It is in Warwickshire, an hour and a bit by train from London’s Marylebone station. It’s a brilliant place — full of independent shops, coffee shops, bars and restaurants and live music. Actually, it was just voted the happiest place to live in the UK. There’s a useful online visitors guide to Leamington here.

Launch exhibition: David Bowie 1977 Iggy Pop by Masayoshi Sukita

Legendary Japanese master photographer Masayoshi Sukita needs no introduction to David Bowie aficionados. He first photographed David Bowie in 1972 in London, and went on to photograph him for over 40 years. In this exhibition we focus on the sessions for Bowie’s 1977 album “Heroes”, when both David Bowie and Iggy Pop were in Japan to promote Iggy’s first album, The Idiot, produced by David Bowie.

The exhibition starts at 11.00am on Saturday 18 November 2017 and runs until 4pm on Sunday 10 December 2017. Sukita-san will be at the gallery on Saturday 18 November 2017, the opening day, until 3.00pm.

We will be posting full details about the exhibition in the run up to the launch at this link.
