Iggy Pop

Photographs by Masayoshi Sukita

Masayoshi Sukita first photographed Iggy Pop at Harajuku studio, Tokyo in April 1977.

Iggy Pop was visiting Japan with David Bowie to promote his debut solo album The Idiot, which had been produced by David Bowie. Musically, The Idiot, was a a departure from the hard rock sounds of his band, the Stooges, and Bowie’s composition worked to surround Iggy’s deep baritone with ominous echo, guitars and synths.

Sukita-san’s relationship with Iggy Pop has continued over a forty year period, and his recent photographs, spanning studio sessions in 2013 and stage performances in 2016, capture his raw power and influence, and show why he is acknowledged as one of the most dynamic stage performers of all time.

Here we present a selection of key images of Iggy from Sukita-san’s archives, which are available to purchase as signed limited editions in a range of sizes.

I stare at myself in the mirror and I think, ‘Wow, I’m really great-looking.’ I think I’m the greatest, anyway.”

“I think they found something in each other that they didn’t have themselves. David found wildness in Iggy, Iggy found intelligence in David. It always seemed to me that this was the reason they worked very well with each other. They always looked like they had a great relationship.”

“People see Iggy as “wild”, but he was quiet and kind of shy at the first time I met him.”
