Alfred Wertheimer
Alfred Wertheimer's intimate photographs capture a 21 year old Elvis Presley at home, in concert, in the studio and backstage.
In 1956, Elvis Presley was at the beginning of his incredible career. Alfred Wertheimer, then a young freelance photojournalist ,“brought up in the realism school of New York ash can photography”, was asked by RCA to photograph their new star for a day. Wertheimer was fascinated by Elvis and whenever time and budget permitted, he continued to photograph him, capturing the everyday moments in his life on 10 different occasions during 1956. These included a trip to Elvis’s home at 1034 Audobon Drive, Memphis, along with photographs in performance, with his fans, and in the recording studio.
The best of Alfred Wertheimer’s Elvis Presley photographs were published in 2006 in a large format hardcover book, ‘Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis’ by Insight Editions, which is well worth tracking down.
Alfred Wertheimer’s exquisite signed handmade silver gelatin photographs are available to purchase in a range of sizes, starting with an 11 x 14 inch paper size.
