Say hello to Backstage. The new limited edition book from Ormond Yard Press.

Ormond Yard Press: Bringing You The Bigger Picture.

Backstage: The Rolling Stones by Gered Mankowitz is being published on 31 July 2016 by Ormond Yard Press and the window to pre-order this incredible signed limited edition is now open. As with all previous Ormond Yard Press volumes, it is a book on a spectacular scale: a hardcover volume housed in its own printed slipcase and measuring 24 inches high x 18 inches wide (60x45cm) when closed, 24 x 36 inches (60 x 90cm) when open, with 96 pages of photographs including an introductory essay by Gered Mankowitz.

Backstage shines the spotlight on what goes on offstage, behind the scenes. Poker with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, sharing toffee apples with Bo Diddley, tuning up in locker rooms full of jockstraps and cuddly toys, and much more. Backstage: The Rolling Stones by Gered Mankowitz, is a fascinating, unguarded photo-essay of these defining days, presented as an ultra-large format signed hardback limited edition of just 750 individually numbered examples worldwide, each one signed by Gered Mankowitz.

Special offer on Backstage

For a limited time, customers pre-ordering Backstage: The Rolling Stones by Gered Mankowitz can lock into a special pre-publication price of £ 250.

What was it really like to be backstage with The Rolling Stones in the mid-sixties?

Backstage: The Rolling Stones by Gered Mankowitz, the incredible new ultra-large-format signed limited edition book from Ormond Yard Press answers that question by putting you at the epicentre.

This ultra-large-format book measures a staggering 18 x 24 inches (45 x 60cm) when closed, and 36 x 24 inches (90 x 60cm) when open. Because of this sheer physical scale, this book is a fully immersive experience.

It is the closest you can get to being backstage in the room with The Rolling Stones between 1965 and 1967.

It feels like you are there, in the room.

Ormond Yard Press: Bringing You The Bigger Picture

Hang your book on your wall in our custom acrylic slide-in slide-out wall display unit

Make no mistake, this is a big book, and we wanted to give you some different display options. Of course you can put it on your coffee table or (big) bookshelf, but we felt it deserved something a bit special. With each of our books, we took a conscious decision to keep the covers free of text, so that nothing would detract from the power of the chosen front and back cover images.

That notion gave rise to the idea of this display unit – because it means you can, should you choose to, display your book just like a piece of art on the wall – which is what it is, after all. It means that you can get up close to, and enjoy, either of the images of Mick or Keith chosen to feature on the front and back cover of the book and slipcase.

Constructed from 5mm clear acrylic, this is a solid, simple and practical way to display your book on your wall in its slipcase. It measures 18.5 inches (w) x 25 inches (h)  x 1.5 inches (d). That’s approximately 47cm x 64cm x 4cm. It has curved edges, and a split baton hanging system on the reverse. Acrylic feet at the bottom ensures that it hangs parallel to the wall. It is a nice, elegant, simple, solid piece of work.

It is open sided on the left and right, allowing you to slide your book (and please read ‘book’ as ‘book and slipcase’ here) in and out whenever you want to look at the contents. You also have the flexibility to show the front or the back of the book and flip it over if you feel like a change of view.

Special offer on the display unit

We are offering an incentive on the display unit: if you purchase Backstage in advance of publication, then you only pay £ 130 for the display unit – a saving of 33% on the usual £ 195 price. The display unit will then ship with your book when shipments of Backstage start.

About Gered Mankowitz

Gered Mankowitz established his first studio in Mason’s Yard in 1963, in the very heart of 1960s swinging London.

Gered started working with the Rolling Stones early in 1965. At his very first Mason’s Yard session in February of that year he produced the album cover for Out of Our Heads (known as December’s Children (And Everybody’s) in the US), several EP covers, sheet music covers, press portraits and even passport photos.

The success of this first shoot secured his position with the band, and, later in the year, Oldham asked him to tour North America on the band’s autumn 1965 tour of the United States. Leaving London at the end of October, Gered flew out with the band and their roadie, Ian ‘Stu’ Stewart. They criss-crossed America for the next six weeks, ending in Los Angeles where the band were booked into Hollywood’s RCA studios to record tracks for the Aftermath album.

Gered worked with the Stones throughout 1966, producing the live images for the cover of Got Live If You Want It! and the famous session on Primrose Hill for the Between the Buttons album cover. He photographed them backstage on Sunday Night at The London Palladium in January 1967.
