John d Green photographed Ingrid Hepner for Birds of Britain at his Kensington studio on 5 July 1966.

As the book was a celebration of swinging London, it made sense for one of the subjects to be swinging, and John photographed Ingrid swinging quite literally – by her neck. The photograph shown here is a previously unpublished image that appears in the gallery exhibition and also in The Big Book of Birds of Britain.

We know very little about Ingrid – she was a model, and apparently took part in the ‘Hatter’s Tea Party’ on 27 February 1967, organised by the Millinery Institute of Great Britain and the London Tourist board, where she was dressed as an Ice Maiden
