Now Stand Tall!
Icons of the New Sonic Generation: Photographs by Dean Chalkley
27th July to 10th July 2006
Exhibitions at Snap have traditionally been deeply rooted in the history of rock 'n' roll, focusing on iconic photographs from the sixties and seventies. Well it's time for us to bring things up to date and celebrate the here and now. We're coming bang up to the moment with an exhibition of photographs by Dean Chalkley, a regular contributor to NME, and an award winning portrait photographer who, for the last three years has been creating what we believe will come to be recognised as future icons.
Dean’s portfolio includes Arctic Monkeys, Pete Doherty, Dirty Pretty Things, The Streets, Franz Ferdinand, Razorlight, The Raconteurs, The White Stripes, The Strokes, and oh so many more.
In fact, the exhibition is so up to the minute that each time we thought we were about to finalise the selection, Dean would be on the phone. " I've just had an amazing session with The Raconteurs, so hold the presses on the brochure for a bit longer while I get you the scans.... " Only today, just as we thought we had it licked, Dean sent me a message from his Blackberry - " I'm in Sweden with the Arctic Monkeys... can we just...... "
Dean would be the last to bang his own drum, so we'll do it for him, and just mention that in March 2006, he collected the Getty Images / Fuji Professional sponsored, Picture Editors Award for “Portrait Photographer of the year”. This was for a series of images which included a portrait of Noel Gallagher sipping tea - you'll see it in the exhibition. The title of the show, “ NOW STAND TALL! “ is courtesy of the same Mr Noel Gallagher : it’s definitely handy if you know a rock ‘n’ roll star who can come up with a snappy title for you just when you need one.
Everything in the exhibition is for sale. Dean produces his work as archival Lambda photographs, on Fuji crystal archive paper, in limited editions of 25 in two paper sizes.
We hope you love Dean's work as much as we do.
